Errata for Above & Beyond: the Aviation Medals of Honor

Pg. 8: 2nd paragraph under Shifting Criteria. A sixth pilot credited with seven victories in one day was Ens. Alfred Lerch, VF-10, who received a Navy Cross for his mission in April 1945.

Pg. 78: Kane died in Pennsylvania on 29 May 1996 vice 1966.

Pg. 130: next to last paragraph should be 23 December vice April.

Pg. 137: Henry Erwin died in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 16 January 2002.

Pg. 155: Joe Foss died in Scottsdale, Arizona, 1 January 2003.

Pg. 224: 3rd to last paragraph should be “two of her four children”.

Pg. 278: Table 1 should have 243 Vietnam medals vice 43 (as of 2001).

Pg.  261: Michael Novosel died on April 2, 2006.

Pg. 279: Fifth line should read “Pease and Cheli survived their shootdowns…” Last line should read “(thirty to six) with the Fifth Air Force accounting for four…”


Addendum: In May 2002 Army Captain Jon Edward Swanson was posthumously awarded the Medal for his February 1971 action as an OH-6 helicopter pilot of the 1st Cavalry Division in Cambodia. His gunner was Staff Sgt. Larry G. Harrison, also KIA.

In February 2007 Army Lt. Col. (then Major) Bruce Crandall was awarded the Medal for his November 1965 action as a UH-1 helicopter pilot of the 1st Cavalry Division at Landing Zone X-Ray in South Vietnam. In 2001 Captain Edward Freeman received the Medal for the same action.

Jay Zeamer died 23 March 2007 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
